NCDHHS Recognizes Three Maternity Centers for Excellence in Breastfeeding Support
NCDHHS is recognizing three maternity centers through the NC Maternity Center Breastfeeding-Friendly Designation Program, as North Carolina celebrates National Breastfeeding Month.
The hospitals include:
- UNC Health Chatham Maternity Care Center in Siler City, which received a Five-Star Designation through its current Baby-Friendly USA designation;
- Mission Hospital in Asheville, which earned a Four-Star Designation; and
- Birthplace at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, which received a Two-Star Designation.
NCDHHS' Maternity Center Breastfeeding-Friendly Designation Program is a voluntary recognition program that honors hospitals for implementing internationally recognized maternity care practices that support breastfeeding and help give families the best possible start after birth. Hospitals earn one to five stars as they implement the World Health Organization's 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, demonstrating measurable progress in practices such as immediate skin-to-skin contact, keeping mothers and babies together whenever medically appropriate and providing consistent, evidence-based infant feeding education before discharge.
Nearly 120,000 babies are born in North Carolina each year, and almost every family begins that journey in a hospital. By encouraging continuous quality improvement, the designation program helps hospitals provide a more consistent experience for families during the first days after birth while reducing common barriers to establishing breastfeeding.
NCDHHS congratulates UNC Health Chatham Maternity Care Center, Mission Hospital, and Birthplace at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital for their commitment to strengthening maternity care and improving the health of North Carolina's mothers, infants and families.
